Arizona sports betting revenue dips in December despite handle increase

Sports betting revenue in Arizona fell 28.9% year-on-year in December despite the Grand Canyon State reporting an increase in customer spending to a near-record total.

Monthly handle across both online and retail wagering in Arizona hit $849.3 million (£655.5 million/€778.3 million). This is 20.2% more than December 2023 and the second-highest monthly amount on record, 5.4% less than November 2024.

Figures from the Arizona Department of Gaming show players ventured $844.3 million betting on sports online in the last month of the year. The remaining $5.1 million was wagered at retail sportsbooks.

Turning to revenue, adjusted gross event wagering receipts before free bet deductions were $49.3 million. This fell short of $69.3 million in 2023 and was also 41.4% behind November’s record $84.1 million haul.

Breaking this down, $49.3 million of revenue came from online wagers, with just $45,000 from retail.

Arizona sets new sports betting handle and revenue records in November

Arizona reported a record sports betting handle for the second consecutive month during November 2024, while the Grand Canyon State also saw revenue reach an all-time high.

Spending on sports betting in November hit $897.6 million (£708.2 million/€856.6 million). This beat October’s prior record of $759.8 million by 18.1% and was also 25.8% ahead of the previous year in Arizona.

Data from the Arizona Department of Gaming shows online spending amounted to $890 million, while retail wagers topped $7.6 million.

Consumer winnings across online and retail totalled $811.3 million. As such, adjusted gross event wagering receipts hit an all-time high of $84.1 million. This beat the previous record, set in September 2024, by 8.7% and was almost double November 2023’s total.

Online betting drew $83.3 million of all adjusted gross event wagering receipts during the month. In contrast, retail sports betting generated just $773,634.

Arizona sets $791.2 million sports betting handle record in October

Consumers in Arizona spent a record $791.2 million (£644.2 million/€768.2 million) betting on sports in October, while revenue in the Grand Canyon State fell just short of an all-time high.

Handle for October surpassed the existing Arizona record of $759.8 million, set in March this year, by 4.1%. It also beat October 2023 by 22.1% and September 2024 by 8.1%, according to Arizona Department of Gaming data. Online sports betting spend in October amounted to $784.4 million, while retail wagering hit $6.8 million.

Players won $735.6 million across online and retail betting, leaving $53.8 million in adjusted gross receipts. This falls 6.9% short of $56.9 million in the previous year and it also lagged 31.5% behind September’s $77.4 million record.

Almost all adjusted gross receipts – $53.6 million – came from online, with retail generating just $205,230 in comparison. On this, overall hold for Arizona in October was 6.80%

Sporttrade, Plannatech awarded Arizona event wagering licences

On Friday (2 August) the Arizona Department of Gaming (ADoG) awarded two tribal-tethered event wagering licences. Sporttrade, currently live in Iowa, New Jersey and Colorado, and UK-based Plannatech are now approved to offer digital betting.
Both companies will be tethered to tribes. Sporttrade will partner with the Quechan Indian tribe of the Fort Yuma Indian reservation and Plannatech will partner with San Carlos Apache Tribal Gaming Enterprise.

The Quechan tribe was formerly partnered with Unibet, which exited the state earlier this year. The San Carlos Apache were partnered with WynnBet, which is unwinding its platform across the country.

Sporttrade offers exchange wagering in New Jersey and has technology that allows an experience similar to playing the stock market. But the company has struggled to convince other regulators to allow this type of betting. It is live in Colorado and Iowa as a traditional sportsbook.
