BetMGM learned from its marketing and spending mistakes, Hornbuckle confident in US product roadmap

MGM Resorts CEO Bill Hornbuckle is confident its BetMGM JV with Entain will increase its EBITDA by $250 million (£193.3 million/€229.9 million) in 2025, thanks to ongoing product updates including single-game parlay, omnichannel and single wallet.

Hornbuckle told the audience at JP Morgan’s Gaming conference on 13 March that, while BetMGM is not the fastest product in the US market today, it is now twice previous iterations.

“I know we’ve stopped losing share,” the CEO said. “I think we see a lot of green shoots particularly in January, February and March. Everything we’ve seen would suggest the projection we’ve given is real and we can hit that target.

“The flow through is about 70%, I would say historically we did some things that we’ve learned from, marketing wise and expense wise.”

Reflecting on these “mistakes,” Hornbuckle said the operator had spent $13 million on a Super Bowl ad in 2023, which he acknowledged “wasn’t the greatest idea”.

“Nor was it a great commercial, t..

Hawaii digital sports betting bill passes first senate committee

Despite opposition from multiple government agencies and several groups of native Hawaiians, a senate committee in the state advanced a digital sports betting bill.

The Hawaii senate joint committee on economic development and tourism and commerce and consumer protection unanimously moved forward HB 1308 on Thursday (13 March). Of the nine votes, four were “with reservations”.

The bill would allow four digital sports betting platforms and no retail locations. It does not have a tax rate or fees in it. Both were removed by a house committee that wanted to keep the issue alive. The bill has been passed in the house and now by one senate committee.

The senate committee members questioned witnesses about how much money legal sports betting would bring into the state and about the potential for gambling addiction.

It was somewhat surprising that the bill got out of committee, as the number of opponents far outnumbered supporters. Opponents included several government agencies as well a..

State of the Union: New York, New York; bills tweaking betting in NJ and NC, more

Welcome to iGB's State of the Union, a look at the biggest North American sports betting stories we've covered over the week and briefs on others we found interesting.

NY’s Addabbo files anti-sweeps, expansion bills

New York state senator Joe Addabbo filed two gambling-related bills in the last week. The latest, S5935, seeks to ban unregulated sweepstakes platforms. Operators of these platforms have been targeted by several state legislatures and the gambling industry, which say the platforms are pulling business from the regulated industry. Sweepstakes platforms operate in a grey area — they are unregulated and do not pay taxes.

Addabbo’s bill clearly defines what sweepstakes are, calling them games that “simulate casino-style gaming”. The list of casino-style games includes everything from blackjack to keno to sports betting. The bill would also make it illegal for licensed suppliers and vendors to work with unregulated platforms. The bill was filed on 4 March and refer..

Weekend Report: Trump set to pardon Pete Rose, new Genting Berhad CEO, Pope betting

Welcome to the Weekend Report, where iGB looks at the news that you may have missed across Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This week: Trump set to pardon Pete Rose, Genting Berhad names new CEO and controversial Pope betting markets.

Trump pledges to pardon Pete Rose

US president Donald Trump has said he will pardon baseball legend Pete Rose and hit out at the decision to exclude him from the sport’s Hall of Fame.

Rose was banned from baseball for life after admitting to betting on the sport back in 2004 but never bet against his own team. His bid for reinstatement was rejected in 2015.

Rose, who also served five months in prison after pleading guilty to tax evasion in 1990, died last year aged 83.

Writing on social media last week, Trump said he will pursue a “complete pardon” for Rose.

“He never betted against himself, or the other team. He had the most hits, by far, in baseball history and won more games than anyone in sports history,” Trump said, according to ESPN.

Hawaii senate committee defers digital betting bill as legalisation hopes fade

A Hawaii senate committee deferred a version of a digital sports betting bill that was sent to the house floor, leaving the issue all but dead.

Up until Wednesday (26 February) afternoon, Hawaii looked like the state with the best shot to legalise digital sports betting in 2025. But the senate commerce and consumer protection/ways and means committee opted instead to defer the bill.

Its companion, HB 1308, got through the house finance committee two days earlier. But without a taste for the issue in the senate, any further action by the house will likely be academic.

SB 1569 did not get any discussion on Wednesday. “After reviewing the testimony, the recommendation is to defer,” said Donovan M Dela Cruz, the chairman of the senate committee.

Written testimony revealed that multiple state government agencies oppose the measure, including the department of the prosecuting attorney; the department of business, economic development and tourism; and the attorney general. All cited co..

China drives MGM Resorts to record revenue in 2024, digital up 28% as betting platform launch is imminent

MGM Resorts International posted a record $17.24 billion (£13.80 billion/€16.53 billion) in consolidated net revenue during its 2024 financial year, driven once again by growth within its China-facing business.

Total revenue for 2024 surpassed the $16.16 billion reported during the previous year by 6.7%. It is also the highest annual amount ever posted by MGM, the operator confirmed yesterday (12 February).

Revenue was flat across two of MGM’s four core divisions – Las Vegas Strip Resorts and Regional Operations. However, significant growth in China, accompanied by a similar increase in digital revenue, pushed the yearly total up.

“We are proud to report the best full-year consolidated net revenues in the history of the company,” CEO Bill Hornbuckle said. “This was driven by a record performance from MGM China. We’re also encouraged by the strong demand we’re seeing in the business so far in 2025, which positions us well for continued growth.”

Greenblatt expects player acquisition decline as BetMGM aims to be “home of the premium mass player”

Entain and MGM Resorts' JV, BetMGM, expects player acquisition rates to slow as it looks to benefit from a premium player base placing higher value bets.

While the group posted a falling EBITDA, once again in the negative, in its FY24 results on 4 February, it pointed to a “year of investment” which sought to increase player value and active users of its product.

Speaking to analysts following the group’s full-year earnings call on 4 February, BetMGM CEO Adam Greenblatt said during the year the focus had been on investing in its igaming strengths and refining its marketing, attribution, CRM and segmentation models.

These helped to drive a stronger performance in the latter part of the year.

Monthly user growth expected to slow

Monthly users in the operator’s fourth quarter were up 55% year-on-year. Greenblatt said this was achieved without the addition of any new states. Total monthly active users for the year hit 946,000, up 14% year-over-year.

However, while BetMGM toute..

Weekend Report: Sportsbet sued in Australia, FanDuel live in Puerto Rico

Welcome to the Weekend Report, where iGB looks at the news that you may have missed across Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This week: Sportsbet faces legal action in Australia, FanDuel launches in Puerto Rico and BetMGM secures gameshow rights.

Australian players launch class-action against Sportsbet

Up first, a group of Sportsbet customers in Australia have launched a class-action lawsuit against the operator, seeking to recover millions of dollars in losses.

Players are demanding Sportsbet repay the money they say was lost through “illegal” live betting, the Australian Associated Press reports. Digital in-play betting on sports is prohibited in Australia.

The suit said Sportsbet should refund gamblers who have lost money using Sportsbet’s ‘Fast Code’ service in the past six years. Fast Code allows players to bet on live sports by making a selection online and calling Sportsbet to place the wager.

Principal lawyer Elizabeth O’Shea is working with the group on the case. She said: “Be..

FanDuel today (11 December) added two new executives to its government relations team while BetMGM announced a new chief marketing officer on 9 December.

LatAm Q3 results round-up: Brazil betting launch dominates discussions

With the majority of the gambling industry having published their Q3 results, iGB looks at how operators fared in the region and their plans for the future there.

Brazil will launch its legal betting market on 1 January 2025 and one operator that is hoping to make a real dent in the market is the giant Flutter Entertainment.

Back in September, Flutter announced it had agreed to acquire an initial 56% stake in NSX Group, which operates the Brazil-facing Betnacional brand. The deal is worth $350 million (£266.5 million/€316.0 million).

For the nine months ending 30 September, Flutter reported year-on-year revenue growth in Brazil of 4%. In its earnings call following the Q3 results release, CFO Rob Coldrake spoke of the operator’s excitement for the market opening.

“We’re very confident about our approach in Brazil,” Coldrake told reporters. “We’ve grown with our brands that we’ve got there already. We’re very excited about the NSX acquisition.”

The NSX acquisition will create a new..

Here are the sports betting platforms that already have Missouri market access

Those in Missouri will finally get a chance to bet on sports after voters approved a legal digital and retail sports betting initiative on 5 November. And every major operator already has some sort of existing relationship with a casino or professional sports team in the state.

Missouri’s new law requires that sports betting go live by 1 December 2025. Given that the state has an existing casino industry, it could launch sooner. And Jan Zimmerman, chair of the Missouri Gaming Commission (MGC) says the rules promulgation process has already started.

“Our folks are writing the rules and regulations as we speak,” Zimmeran told KFVS 12 on 12 November.

Zimmerman didn’t reveal a projected launch date or when rules might be available for review. But the MGC meets at the end of each month, usually around the 25th. The agenda and date for the November meeting are not posted yet. Once the process starts, it’s likely that the commission will first approve an application and open that process…
