Ushering in 2025, the sector has hit the ground running in preparation for ICE Barcelona in a couple of weeks. Across the pond a couple of US states have kicked off their legislative sessions this year with bills supporting online gaming launches. Genius Sports announces move into free-to-play games vertical

Genius Sports has announced the launch of interactive free-to-play games for its operators, which include the likes of Betway and Bet365.

Genius’ free-to-play offering will include weekly and matchday games, tournament games and daily retention games. These are intended to meet purposes such as activating a sportsbook brand and delivering segmented daily player interaction.

Genius will also offer bespoke free-to-play solutions to meet operators’ objectives, including gamification strategy design, as well as custom game development.

Boom Entertainment acquires NBC Sports’ predictions app

US gaming group Boom Entertainment has acquired the NBC Sports Predictor from entertainment giant Comcast.

The New York-headquartered game developer and technology provider will now take full control of the free-to-play app having acted as NBC Sports’ development and operating partner on the product since its launch in 2019.

NBC Sports Predictor has welcomed nearly two million sign-ups over the last four years, with tens of millions of predictions played.

The product will be re-branded Predictor, with plans to launch several new game formats before the end of the year. No financial details were given concerning the acquisition.

Buying and selling the future of US sports betting

WagerWire is taking the simple concept of buying and selling bets and aiming to disrupt the US sports betting industry. As it looks to do away with transactional sportsbook experiences, and operators buy into the vision, chief experience officer Travis Geiger tells iGB there’s a new breed of executives ready to take charge.

“From the bettor’s point of view, it’s like StockX or Coinbase,” chief experience officer Travis Geiger says of WagerWire’s core proposition. “We want to be your central hub for all things sports betting. We’re not just trying to sign you up; we’re trying to be a part of your betting journey.”

It’s a big claim, but WagerWire is entirely different from any other US sportsbook. It holds affiliate vendor licences in 16 US states as well as Washington DC, Puerto Rico and Ontario. Genius Sports agrees data distribution deal with XFL

Sports data business Genius Sports has agreed to a new data distribution and fan engagement partnership with minor football league XFL.

As part of the deal, XFL has granted Genius exclusive rights to distribute official data from all XFL games to its media and betting partnerships.

As such, Genius Sports is now XFL’s official betting data distribution partner and free-to-play provider.

Genius Sports’ executive vice-president, Sean Conroy, said that having a comprehensive data policy is an important part of a sports organisation’s financial success.

“For every sports league, an official data strategy that drives both new revenues and fan engagement levels is vitally important,” he said. “We’re thrilled to partner with the XFL, connecting their games with the media and betting sectors while creating meaningful fan interactions through the bespoke XFL Pick’Em solution.”

Playtech enters F2P and DFS partnership with ITP

Inside The Pocket (ITP) and Playtech have entered into a strategic partnership, which will see ITP's free-to-play (F2P) and daily fantasy sports (DFS) platform offered to Playtech's international operator partners.

As part of the deal, over 100 F2P and DFS games will be offered to a number of Playtech’s operators around the world, giving ITP a “broader scope” in the market.

This distribution will occur “territory-by-territory”.

The deal will allow ITP to establish itself as a tool for Playtech customers, wherein they can take advantage of ITP’s acquisition and retention tools.

Free-to-play comes out of real-money betting’s shadow

When online gambling expansion is brought up, discussions are usually limited to sports betting and occasionally online casino. Yet free-to-play games are becoming a key part of the ecosystem, as more than an addendum to real-money betting.

It’s easy to look at the broad spectrum of online gambling expansion and see only sports betting.

After all, it’s the dominant force as far as rapid growth goes, and it’s coming to new states every few months. Maryland launched in November, Ohio on 1 January, and Massachusetts is making real progress.

Meanwhile, daily fantasy sports, fee-to-play sportsbooks, and prediction platforms are firmly nestled in the conversation but often buried by talk of real-money sports betting.
