Legislative roundup: MD tax hike, NJ sweepstakes, more

Legislative season is never dull for the gaming industry and this latest roundup includes a potential tax hike in Maryland and a sweepstakes bill in New Jersey.

Bills to legalise online casino gaming in Wyoming and Indiana, a proposed gambling tax rate hike in Maryland and a bill to legalise “sweepstakes gaming” in New Jersey were all rolled out this week as what tends to be a four-month flurry of legislative activity across the US begins.

In Maryland, gambling expansion backers have said they intend to reintroduce their own igaming legislation soon. But the more immediate news on Wednesday (15 January) was that Wes Moore, the governor of Maryland, introduced his annual budget. It notably includes his endorsement of a boost in sports betting tax from 15% to 30% and a rise in casino table game rates from 20% to 25%.

Ohio and Illinois already have raised their sports betting tax rates in the past year. The former did so less than a year after the first legal bets were placed.

What do NCAA athletes, coaches and administrators really think of the proliferation of gambling? One college professor sought to find out.
Early in this college football season, Michigan State quarterback Aidan Chiles made national headlines when he was talking to media members about the Spartans’ upcoming game against Florida Atlantic.

Rather than predict a high-scoring contest, Chiles put it in different terms that caught many off-guard.

“If you bet, take the over,” said Chiles.

A starting QB making a blatant sports betting reference in front of the media generated a storyline that those within the walls of the NCAA offices would rather not deal with.

Chiles’ remarks are just another example of how much sports betting has become a mainstream topic. Such is the case when promotions from the national sportsbooks have become ubiquitous during game time.

Notre Dame suspends men’s swim programme, citing gambling violations

The University of Notre Dame announced on Thursday (15 August) that it is suspending its men's swimming programme for at least one year due to widespread conduct violations, including gambling.
In a statement, the Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua said an independent investigation was launched after officials heard reports of potential misconduct. The investigation uncovered “deeply embedded” cultural issues. This included “numerous violations of NCAA rules prohibiting gambling on intercollegiate swimming and other athletic competitions”.

As a result, Notre Dame will suspend the entire programme for “at least” one academic year. There have been multiple college betting scandals, including one in Iowa, in recent years but none involving an entire team.

No individual athletes were named in the announcement. Rather, Bevacqua asserted that the “overwhelming cultural dynamic on the team necessitates a full suspension”. The team’s coaching staff is believed to be uninvolve..
