US sports betting round-up: Indiana, Iowa and Delaware in September

Rounding up some of the latest monthly sports betting results in the US, iGB takes a look at how Indiana, Iowa and Delaware performed in September. Delaware also reported igaming numbers.
Revenue and handle growth in Indiana
Starting in Indiana, consumers spent $483.8m (£369.5m/€443.5m) betting on sports during September. This is 19.7% more than the same month last year and 57.1% ahead of August this year.

American football drew the most sports bets at $175.4m, driven by the start of the NFL and college football seasons. Baseball ranked second with $54.5m, while parlay bets totalled $164.4m.

The Indiana Gaming Commission also reported taxable adjusted gross revenue (AGR) in September reached $53.0m. This beats last year’s total by 29.0% and August by 65.1%.

As such, Indiana was left with a state-wide hold of 10.95% for the month.

DraftKings remains the market leader. It posted $19.3m in revenue off a $190.3m handle for a hold of 10.14%. FanDuel remains second with $18.2m from $148..

Pakistan cricket legend faces backlash over betting ambassador role
Starting in Asia, Pakistan cricket captain Wasim Akram has come under fire for taking on a new betting ambassador role with Baji.

India-facing Baji offers online sports betting and casino and has enlisted several celebrities to help promote its services. Akram is among those to come on board despite Pakistan having placed restrictions on promoting gambling.

Fans took to social media to criticise Akram after he shared a promotional video on social media. Questions were also raised as to why Akram is working with an operator that is not licensed in Pakistan.

G2E: When it comes to integrity, industry should “celebrate its wins”

In 2023, 10 NFL players were suspended for violating league gambling rules and a college baseball scandal involving insider information was uncovered. An outcry questioning the legal industry followed. But those who specialise in integrity monitoring say that instead, the industry – and others – should celebrate.
“Let’s not fool ourselves – matching fixing and integrity issues aren’t new,” Jim Brown, head of integrity services & harm prevention in North America for Sportradar, said. “This brings better protections.”

The NFL and NCAA examples were among many in 2023 and 2024 that involved the gambling industry policing itself and uncovering banned or illegal activity.

Online casino drives Denmark gambling revenue to DKK571m in August

Gross gaming revenue (GGR) in Denmark reached DKK571m (£64.2m/€76.6m/$84.1m) in August as online casino growth offset declines elsewhere in the market.
The August total was 4.3% ahead of last year, according to data from Denmark regulator Spillemyndigheden. It was also 3.1% more than DKK554m in July of this year.

Growth was driven by a 20.8% year-on-year increase in online casino revenue to DKK299m in August.

This was also ahead of July by 5.3% and not far off the all-time monthly revenue record for the vertical. Spillemyndigheden reported DKK309m in online casino GGR in March of this year.

However, all other segments of the Danish market reported declines in August. The largest drop came in the sports betting sector, where revenue was 14% lower at DKK147m during the month. This was also 1.3% lower than in July.

Betfred stepping back from sports betting in several states
First, Betfred has confirmed it is exiting two more US states by announcing closure dates for its sports betting services in both Arizona and Virginia.

Betfred will cease online operations in Virginia first, with a date of 21 October confirmed by the bookmaker. This will be followed by a shutdown in Arizona a couple of weeks later on 4 November. Customers in both states will have until 10pm local time in each state to access their account and make withdrawal requests.

This confirmation follows Betfred’s exit from several other US states during recent months. It ceased online and retail operations in Colorado on 31 August, ..

Gambling advertising laws tightened in New York

The bill ensures all forms of wagering, including online, will carry responsible gambling messaging.
In a move aimed at addressing the growing concerns over gambling addiction, New York’s governor, Kathy Hochul, signed into law new legislation that mandates stronger warnings in gambling and sports betting advertisements. The legislation, S1550/A1118, requires all gambling-related advertisements, including those for mobile sports wagering, to include clear warnings about the potentially harmful and addictive effects of gambling.

This move expands on previous regulations. New York previously required only the display of a problem gambling hotline number and didn’t cover online gambling.

The legislation also mandates that the New York State Gaming Commission collaborate with the Commissioner of Addiction Services and Supports to ensure that all gaming-related advertisements prominently display a hotline for problem-gambling assistance.

Sweden channelisation rate at 86% according to Spelinspektionen report

Sweden gambling regulator Spelinspektionen has placed the country’s online channelisation rate at 86%; higher than operator estimates and some way above the previous year’s figure.
Detailed in a new report, the Sweden channelisation rate applies to the online gambling market in 2023.

The latest rate surpasses the 77% Spelinspektionen reported for 2022. It is also above forecasts from several operators local including Aktiebolaget Trav och Galopp, which in March estimated a rate of between 69% and 82%.

Unlicensed turnover hits SEK2.5bn
The regulator estimates black market sites generated SEK2.5bn (£183.5m/€220.2m/$243.3m) in turnover in 2023, compared to SEK17.3bn for licensed operators.

However, estimates are based on the assumption that players are wagering the same amount per visit across both unlicensed and licensed operators, which the regulator itself said may not be the case.

Influx of Brazil betting licence applications as enforcement deadline passes

With the deadline for licence applications from operators wishing to be active in Brazil during the transition period closing at 11.59pm yesterday (30 September), a late flurry has taken the total of requests to 182.
In mid-September, the Brazil government published Normative Ordinance No 1,475. This set out plans to launch enforcement action against operators that failed to submit a licence application by 1 October.

Only companies that were both already active and that had applied for a licence would be allowed to continue operating in the transition period between 1 October and 31 December. This counts down to the legal online market launch on 1 January 2025.

This is the second key licensing deadline in Brazil. The first passed on 20 August when the initial 90-day window of preference shut. The 113 operators that applied during that period ensured their applications will be processed by the Secretariat of Prizes and Bets (SPA) ahead of the legal market’s launch date.

Brazil’s IBJR members agree to expedite credit card ban to October

The National Association of Games and Lotteries (ANJL) and the Brazilian Institute of Responsible Gaming (IBJR) have both advised their members to bring forward their ban on gambling with credit cards. All of the IBJR's members have agreed to expedite the ban.
Published in April, Normative Ordinance No 615 banned the use of credit cards, crypto, cash, payment slips or cheques for betting when the legal Brazil online betting market goes live on 1 January 2025.

However only companies already active in Brazil that have applied for a betting licence will be able to continue operating from 1 October.

Both the ANJL and IBJR have urged their respective members to voluntarily bring forward the prohibition of credit cards after discussions with the ministry of finance. For the IBJR, which claims its members account for around 70% of the betting market in Brazil, the move is aligned with its wider objective to secure a safe betting market in the country.

Flutter claims 11% Brazil market share following NSX acquisition

Flutter is among the top three betting companies in Brazil with an 11% market share, thanks to its acquisition of a 56% stake in Betnacional parent NSX Group. Its position in Brazil was outlined in some detail during the group's Capital Markets Day presentation.
Flutter said the NSX Group acquisition would provide the group with necessary local expertise in the Brazilian market. The deal is expected to close by Q2 2025 and will help establish a new ‘Flutter Brazil’ business, which will include its existing Betfair brand. NSX Group’s Pagbet, MrJack.bet and Betpix brands will also fall under the new business arm.

According to Regulus Partners and internal estimates, NSX holds 9% of the total online market in Brazil. It estimates Brazil’s net gaming revenue (NGR) for 2023 was $2.8bn. Of that figure, Flutter claims its Betfair brands, alongside those it acquired in the NSX deal, came third in revenue terms with over a tenth of the market.

Study suggests Canadian regulators should pace themselves when crafting RG rules

Within a year of launching legal online gambling in Canada, complaints about frequency and content of advertising were common. A new study suggests regulators are moving too quickly to appropriately address the issue.
The Canadian Gaming Association on Wednesday (25 September) released an academic and policy study. It posits that new gambling regulations in Canada are “evolving at a faster rate than the accompanying evidence base”. This could ultimately mean that regulations don’t tackle targeted issues and could be “insufficiently nuanced”.

The study – a “rapid review” – is designed to be informational for regulators and other stakeholders. GP Consulting conducted the study using a US-based team. The team included policy specialists from from Eilers & Krejcik and academics from UNLV’s International Gaming Institute and Washington State University.
