NCAA intensifies responsible gambling campaign as college hoops scandals linger

US authorities are still conducting a sweeping probe into an illicit betting ring with alleged connections to pro and college basketball.

The NCAA men’s basketball tournament ended on Monday night (7 April) with a scintillating comeback by the University of Florida, which erased a 12-point second-half deficit to edge Houston in the national title game.

In the past, the Cougars’ defeat may have provided famed bettor Jim McIngvale with nagging indigestion, due to the Houston furniture store owner’s affinity for placing seven-figure bets backing the Cougars. Last year, the entrepreneur stood to make $15 million (£11.7 million/€13.6 million) if Kelvin Sampson’s team cut down the nets. In the run-up to this year’s Final Four, though, no large bet from McIngvale was publicised.

As part of an initiative to promote responsible gambling, the NCAA has urged bettors to gamble within their means. Throughout March Madness, the NCAA promoted its “Draw the Line” educational campaign about gambling..

State of the Union: MD governor wants betting tax increase, new AR bill, more

Welcome to iGB's State of the Union, a look at the biggest North American sports betting stories we've covered over the week and briefs on others we found interesting.

Mixed bag in Maryland

Maryland’s governor, Wes Moore, unveiled his latest budget proposal on Thursday (20 March) night and it’s not terribly favourable for the gambling industry. The proposal does not include any funding from online casino and does include a sports betting tax hike.

Moore previously floated the idea of doubling the tax rate on wagering from 15% to 30%. In his new proposal, he pitches a 20% tax rate, which is projected to bring in an additional $32 million (£24.6 million/€29.6 million) in tax revenue in FY 2026. The state is facing a $3 billion deficit.

If lawmakers follow through, Maryland would become the third state in two years to raise its betting tax. Ohio was the first when Governor Mike DeWine pushed through a bump from 10% to 20% in July 2023, six months after wagering went live. He..

Welcome to iGB's State of the Union, a look at the biggest North American sports betting stories we've covered over the week and briefs on others we found interesting.

Study raises RG alarm, but should it?

Since the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) was overturned in 2018, the number of internet searches terms around “gambling addiction” has risen 23% nationally, according to an American Medical Association JAMA Internal Medicine investigation. Published on 17 February, the responsible gaming (RG) study revealed that searches rose most in Pennsylvania (50%), Massachusetts (47%), New York (37%) and New Jersey (34%).

In the abstract, investigators wrote, “The results of this time series study suggest that access to sportsbooks, sports wagers and potential help-seeking for gambling addiction increased substantially and highlight the need to address the health implications of sportsbooks, including recognition and treatment of gambling problems and their b..

Mizuhara gets 57-month prison term; judge says he “undermined” himself

Former Shohei Ohtani Japanese-language interpreter Ippei Mizuhara was sentenced on Thursday (6 February) to 57 months in federal prison and three years of parole. He was also ordered to pay more than $18 million (£14.5 million/€17.3 million) in restitution after stealing from Ohtani to fund an illegal gambling habit.

US district judge John Holcomb said Mizuhara “undermined” himself with a letter he wrote to the court asking for an 18-month sentence. Holcomb said he gave the letter no weight because Mizuhara “misrepresented truths” and it “suffered from (missing) important facts”.

Mizuhara, who pleaded guilty to two federal counts in June, stole nearly $17 million from Ohtani for gambling debts. On Thursday he was sentenced in US District Court for the Central District of California. The maximum sentence for one count of bank fraud and one count of signing a fraudulent tax return was 33 years.

He asked for and was granted 45 days to report to begin his sentence in a Southern Califo..

Bovada may feel hit of exiting US markets more for igaming than wagering

Analysing the financial blow to the offshore operator now that it is blocked in 15 jurisdictions.
Bovada could see a significant financial impact from 15 US markets – and counting – sending it cease-and-desist letters.

But maybe not in the way you would expect, according to one gambling expert.

Massachusetts recently sent a cease-and-desist letter to Bovada, the offshore betting megasite, joining Kansas, Pennsylvania and Louisiana as recent additions to its list of restricted markets. Anyone can find that list on its website under the “Which Countries are Restricted?” section – which only includes US markets and no other locations around the world.

These are the markets on that list (Massachusetts isn’t on there yet, but it should be soon):

Colorado
Connecticut
Delaware
Kansas
Louisiana
Maryland
Michigan
Nevada
New York
New Jersey
Ohio
Pennsylvania
Washington, DC
