Irish footballer faces ban over betting charge

The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has issued a six-month ban to Finn Harps FC player Ryan Rainey after he was found to have breached betting rules.

Breaches are connected to a number of League of Ireland and Men’s FAI Cup games that took place between 2021 and 2024. The FAI said Rainey also placed a “significant” number of bets on football worldwide in 2024.

After a disciplinary hearing, an Independent Disciplinary Committee ruled Rainey should face a ban. This has since been confirmed by the League of Ireland, in which his team, Finn Harps FC, plays.

Weekend Report: Google to lift social casino advert ban, NHL players reveal sports betting harassment

Welcome to the Weekend Report, where iGB looks at the news that you may have missed across Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This week: Google to lift ban on social casino adverts, NHL players face sports betting harassment and Jackpot.com pens 7-Eleven partnership.

Google to allow targeted social casino adverts

First this week, Google will lift a ban on targeted and personalised adverts for online social casino games. Social casinos will be removed from Google’s restricted ‘Gambling’ sensitive interest category with effect from 4 December.

Effectively, Action Network reports, this will mean adverts for social casinos are allowed to appear on web pages that consumers visit regularly. This covers all forms of social casino including slot, poker and roulette.

Google has not said specifically why it is removing social casino from its exclusion list of advertisers.

Online casino continues to uplift OPAP revenue in Q3

Greek gambling group OPAP posted a 17.6% year-on-year increase in revenue for Q3, helped by double-digit growth across its lottery, sports betting and online casino segments.

Gross gaming revenue for the three months to 30 September hit €565.8 million (£471.6 million/$596.6 million). This comfortably surpasses the €481 million reported by OPAP in Q3 last year.

Figures from the operator published last night (20 November) show growth in four of its five core divisions. Lottery generated the most revenue at €200 million, but arguably the star of the show was online casino where revenue jumped 48.3%.

This continued a trend seen throughout H1, with growth in the online casino business far outpacing other areas.

Q3 online growth fails to offset continued land-based decline in Sweden

Gambling revenue in Sweden hit SEK6.66 billion (£477 million/€574 million/$605 million) in Q3, with growth in the igaming segment failing to offset declines in land-based.

Revenue was 1.3% behind the SEK6.74 billion recorded during Q3 of 2023, Sweden regulator Spelinspektionen reports.

The figure also falls 3.4% short of SEK6.89 billion in Q2 of this year. On top of this, Q3 revenue was the lowest quarterly total since SEK6.58 billion was reported in Sweden in Q1 2023.

Commercial online gambling remains the primary source of gambling revenue in the country by some distance. During Q3, SEK4.33 billion of revenue was reported for this segment, a year-on-year increase of 1.5%. This includes internet-based casino and sports betting activity.

Digital growth pushes year-to-date revenue to €2.10bn at FDJ

La Française des Jeux (FDJ) has reported an 11.9% year-on-year increase in revenue for its financial year-to-date, driven by growth within its digital business, while the group has set out full-year expectations after completing its acquisition of Kindred.
Publishing figures for the nine months to September, FDJ said revenue amounted to €2.01bn (£1.67bn/$2.18bn). This includes lottery, sports betting and igaming operations, as well as international and payment services.

The French monopoly operator reported growth across all areas of the business, although it saw the largest rise within its sports betting and igaming segments.

“FDJ continues to deliver a solid financial and non-financial performance,” FDJ chairwoman and CEO Stéphane Pallez said.

“This performance was driven both by the lottery and by sports betting and online gaming open to competition and by all our distribution channels, with a network of points of sale in progression and strong momentum from digital games.”

GSGB H1: UK gambling participation flat as nearly a third of customers play non-lottery verticals

The UK Gambling Commission today published its latest iteration of the Gambling Survey for Great Britain (GSGB), looking at gambling participation across the UK between 15 January and 28 April. Participation remained flat on 2023, as majority of participants gambled to win “big money”.
The data follows the annual GSGB survey published for the first time in July and looks at how much UK adults are gambling.

Participation for the actual survey sample increased 8% as the sample size grew from 4,801 in the GC’s equivalent report last year (January to April), to 5,191 this year.

Gambling participation remains flat across the board
Overall gambling participation between January and April was the same as last year at 48% across the entire sample. This dropped to 27% when excluding lottery.

Caixa expects to be a major player in the Brazil betting market

Caixa Loterias president Carlos Antônio Vieira Fernandes believes the company will be one of the leaders in the upcoming Brazil betting market.
Caixa, Brazil’s federal bank, submitted its licence application on 20 August, a day before the initial 90-day preference window closed. By applying during that timespan, Caixa, like other operators who filed in that window, is guaranteed its request will be processed by 1 January 2025. That is the expected launch date of the legal betting market in Brazil.

Brazil’s Secretariat of Prizes and Betting (SPA) received 113 applications during the priority window.

If the application is successful, Caixa, a Brazilian bank which holds a federal monopoly on lottery, will be able to offer sports betting to players in Brazil. The market is expected to be highly lucrative.

Report: DC attorney-general prepping investigation into Intralot’s mismanagement of wagering platform

According to the Washington City Paper, DC attorney-general Brian Schwalb has requested documents from lottery contractor Intralot. The request may mean the AG's office is looking into whether or not the company violated the city's “false claims” law.
What Schwalb’s office learns from the request will determine next steps, according to the City Paper report on Thursday (8 August). But if the AG’s office finds Intralot broke the law, it could fine the company.

It would also seem that likely that Schwalb’s office could create a compliance plan for Intralot or prohibit it from doing business with the city.

Intralot’s most recent lottery and sports betting contract expired on 15 July. The lottery did not renew the wagering contract. Online slots growth pushes Lithuania gambling revenue to €116m in H1

Gambling revenue in Lithuania increased 12.6% year-on-year to €116.0m (£99.3m/$126.7m) in H1 with a strong online performance mitigating a decline in land-based revenue.
Figures from the Lithuania Gaming Control Authority show H1 revenue was clear of the €108.5m reported in the same period last year.

Starting with the online market, revenue for the channel climbed 12.5% year-on-year to €72.2m. Player spending increased by 8.7% to €1.05bn, winning $973.1m in the process.

Slots reign supreme in Lithuania online gambling market
Category A online slots – games with unlimited winnings – were undoubtedly the star of the show in H1. These slots generated €53.5m in revenue, more than any other segment across both the online and land-based market in Lithuania. Survey reveals Betano as most recognisable brand in Brazil

Kaizen Gaming-owned Betano is the most recognisable and trusted betting brand in Brazil, a survey by Env Media has revealed.

Env Media centred its survey on the 20 most popular brands in Brazil, including the likes of Betano, Bet365 and Betfair. The study aimed to establish what operators held the greatest share of voice in Brazil by looking at their visibility and market shares.

This is ahead of the regulated market going live following the December approval of Bill 3,626/2023, legalising sports betting and igaming.

The survey asked 500 active adult bettors which operators they were both aware of and trusted. Betano led the way with 73.4% of respondents stating they recognised and trusted the operator. Bet365, meanwhile, was second, selected by 67.2% of those surveyed.

Brazilian operator Pixbet was third, recognised and trusted by 54.7% of respondents, while Sportingbet and Betnacional were selected by 42.6% and 41.6% respectively.

Queens casino controversial among politicians

Businessman Steve Cohen’s plan to build a casino in Queens adjacent to the Mets’ Citi Field earlier this week got the endorsement of a city councilman, but a state senator said Cohen has not been “open and transparent”, according to the New York Post.

PNR Tecnologia and Lema request Loterj accreditation amid IBJR criticism

PNR Tecnologia and Lema have become the latest gambling companies to seek accreditation from the Rio de Janeiro State Lottery (Loterj), which is coming under fire from the Brazilian Institute for Responsible Gaming (IBJR).

On Wednesday (3 April), PNR Tecnologia delivered documentation seeking to operate sports betting and online games with Loterj accreditation. On Friday (5 April), Lema visited the Loterj headquarters.

This was to carry out a proof of concept and evaluate its compliance with Loterj regulations. This was after Lema had previously presented its platform to operate sports betting and ilottery in March.

In March, Caesars Sportsbook-licensee BIG Brazil announced it was looking for Loterj accreditation to offer both sports betting and lottery. Loterj has since been criticised for its attempts to operate in Brazil outside its state of Rio de Janeiro.
