AGA releases Super Bowl estimate for legal market only; projects record spend

This year’s projected figure for ‘legal handle’: $1.39 billion.

The American Gaming Association (AGA) released its annual Super Bowl betting handle estimate on Tuesday (4 February) morning – but took a different approach than in past years.

The headline news: American sports bettors are projected to legally wager a record $1.39 billion (£1.11 billion/€1.34 billion) on Super Bowl LIX. The game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles at Caesars Superdome is set for Sunday (9 February).

But it is difficult to put that number in context relative to AGA estimates in prior years. Previously, the AGA estimated how many American adults would be betting and how much they would be risking across all regulated and unregulated options. The organisation did this for each of the post-PASPA Super Bowls. This included off-the-books “Super Bowl Squares” pools with family and friends.

Those projections, by year:

2019: 22.7 million adults, $6.0 billion
2020: 26 million adults, $6.8 bi..

Report: Louisiana regulator drops gambling charges against Patriots player

ESPN reported on Tuesday (16 July) morning that the Louisiana State Police Gaming Enforcement Division had dropped gambling charges against Kayshon Boutte. The charges stemmed from actions when Boutte played for the Louisiana State college football team.

Boutte, now a wide receiver with the New England Patriots, was arrested on gambling charges in January, per ESPN. State investigators found that Boutte bet on sports between 6 April 2022 and 7 May 2023. He was 20 at the time. Under Louisiana law, only those over the age of 21 are permitted to wager.

The ESPN report did not indicate why the gambling charges were dropped.

Boutte allegedly created a betting account on a legal sportsbook using an alias. He allegedly placed more than 8,900 bets, including 17 on the NFL and six on LSU during a 13-month span. The betting continued for a week after he was drafted by the Patriots in 2023.

Christopher Hebert appointed new Louisiana gaming chief

On Monday (24 June) Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry appointed Christopher Hebert as the state's new gaming chief. Former head regulator Ronnie Johns announced his retirement earlier this year and 30 June will be his last day.

Hebert was a director handling gaming in the attorney-general’s office. In that role, he worked closely with Johns, who retires as one of the most influential figures in Louisiana gaming. Herbert is the first black man to be named chairman of the Louisiana Gaming Control Board (LGCB), according to a press release from Landry’s office.

“Proper regulation of the gaming industry is crucial at a time in which gaming revenue continues to be a substantial part of our state’s economy,” Herbert said via press release. “I am both humbled and honored that Governor Landry has tapped me as the first African-American chairman of the Louisiana Gaming Control board and I vow to continue the hard work of previous chairmen in ensuring that gaming is free from criminal and c..

Cavaliers coach: Gambler threatened me

Cleveland Cavaliers coach JB Bickerstaff told reporters on 20 March that a gambler had tracked down his phone number and sent “crazy messages about where I live, my kids and all that stuff”.

As reported by the Associated Press, Bickerstaff went on to say that he had shared the information with stadium security. The gambler was located and escorted out of Rocket Mortgage Field House. The coach did not press charges.
