Beter lands first US approval in New Jersey

Sports betting odds, data and content provider Beter has secured its first approval in the US.

Vendor registration from the New Jersey Department of Gaming Enforcement enables Beter to work with licensed operators in the state. This includes delivering its real-time data and live streams.

The first approved product is its flagship Setka Cup table tennis tournaments. This is already live in New Jersey from Bet365.

Beter arranges over 11,000 Setka Cup matches per month, offering more than 30 betting markets per event. In total, it organises over 46,000 fast-betting events monthly across esports and sports disciplines.

New Zealand authorities crack down on gambling influencers

First, authorities in New Zealand have launched a crackdown on social media influencers promoting offshore online gambling websites.

According to RNZ, the department of internal affairs (DIA) has issued its first takedown notices of influencers promoting illegal operators. Those that fail to comply could face hefty fines, the DIA warned.

The New Zealand Gambling Act makes it illegal to publish an advertisement for an offshore, unlicensed gambling operator.

“We’ve been investigating this,” director of gambling regulatory services Vicki Scott said. “We will be taking actions in relation to those influencers who are very publicly and clearly breaking the law.”

ESPN Bet secures DC market access with Monumental Sports partnership

Penn Entertainment is to launch ESPN Bet in Washington DC after securing market access in the US capital through a new partnership with Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE).

Effective immediately, the long-term deal enables ESPN Bet to join several other approved online operators already established in DC. These include BetMGM, FanDuel, Caesars, Fanatics and DraftKings.

According to a 14 January statement, ESPN Bet will also become a sports betting partner of MSE and its various sports teams. MSE owns and operates NHL ice hockey team the Washington Capitals, NBA basketball team the Washington Wizards and the Washington Mystics of the WNBA. It also counts several multi-purpose venues among its portfolio of assets.

Entain reiterates EBITDA guidance for FY24

Entain said it remains confident of EBITDA guidance for FY24 despite taking a hit in the latter part of the year from customer-friendly sports results in the US.

Entain set out full-year targets during its Q3 trading update in October. Here, it said group EBITDA would be at the upper end of a range between £1.04 billion (€1.24 billion/$1.26 billion) and £1.09 billion.

Now, Entain has repeated this guidance despite its BetMGM joint venture in the US being impacted in Q4. Unfavourable sports results meant players won more during the period, which in turn impacted performance.

Minister for Brazil's Federal Supreme Court Luis Fux has filed an injunction to ban betting via Brazil's Bolsa Familia social welfare cheque. The measure will be put to an emergency session of the Brazilian chamber of deputies today with plans to enforce it effective immediately.

The decision was made after a two-day hearing at the Federal Supreme Court (STF), initiated on Monday 12 November, sought to investigate the impacts of betting in Brazil and determine whether the law governing the upcoming legal market is constitutional.

The STF hearing was called following a request from Brazil’s third biggest trade union, the National Confederation of Trade in Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC), filed an ADI (Ação Direta de Inconstitucionalidade) which is a legal action in Brazil intended to overturn a law that conflicts with the country’s Constitution.

First up, major sportsbooks in the US will no longer allow players to place a prop-style bet on the lowest-earning NBA players, sources have told The Athletic.

Quoting the article, the New York Times reported that the decision comes after months of talks between the NBA and its gambling partners. These include both FanDuel and DraftKings. From now on, no “under” bets will be offered on players on a two-way or 10-day contract.

Study shows gambling ads increased threefold on Premier League opening weekend

Almost 30,000 gambling adverts featured across television, radio and social media during the opening weekend of this season’s English Premier League, according to a report by the University of Bristol.
Funded by a GambleAware grant, the research found gambling adverts almost trebled since last year. The 2024-25 Premier League season kicked off on 16 August, with games taking place until 19 August.

During the opening round of games, the university recorded 29,145 adverts, compared to 10,999 the previous year. This includes pitch-side hoardings and shirt logos featuring on live televised matches and news coverage of games.

Televised gambling messages rocket 240%
Television appeared to be the main area of concern for researchers. The report found that the number of gambling messages that appeared during the six televised games across the opening weekend totalled 23,690, up 240% from last year.

Yield Sec: Black market gambling ads present on almost half of illegal Olympic Games streams

Gambling adverts promoting black market brands appeared on 46% of all illegal streams showing coverage of this summer’s Olympic Games, more than any other industry, according to new data released by technical intelligence platform Yield Sec.
Published today (21 August), the report outlines the scale of illegal streaming of events at the Paris Olympic Games. This year’s Games ran from 26 July to 11 August.

Yield Sec estimates there were 266.7m illegal stream views of 90 seconds or more during the Olympics.

“Illegal streaming is not about getting something for nothing – it’s about the serious risks users unknowingly expose themselves to,” Yield Sec said.

“Users believe that they get premium entertainment content for ‘free’ but in fact settle their ‘bill’ through the unknowing provision of their data, devices and device processing power to illegal streamers and the often criminal groups that back them.”

ASA reiterates ad guidelines ahead of Euro 2024 and warns against targeting minors

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has warned operators against targeting minors with advertising ahead of the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament.

Euro 2024 gets underway on 14 June, with sports betting activity likely to skyrocket during the tournament in Germany. Ahead of the event, the ASA has reiterated to operators their guidelines on what will be prohibited in their advertising.

The ASA highlighted the UK Code of Non-broadcast Advertising and Direct & Promotional Marketing (CAP Code). The CAP Code stipulates that gambling operators must not feature anybody under the age of 25 in their advertising, including footballers. However, there is an exception for websites where bets can be placed directly.

The ASA also warned that ads mustn’t involve any player deemed to have a strong appeal to those under 18.
