Maryland fifth state to send cease-and-desist letters to Robinhood, Kalshi and Crypto.com

The state joins Nevada, New Jersey, Ohio and Illinois in seeking to ban sports prediction markets.

Maryland has become the fifth state to send cease-and-desist letters to Kalshi, Robinhood and Crypto.com as the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission has directed the companies to stop offering sporting event contracts in the state.

Maryland joins Illinois, Ohio, Nevada and New Jersey in seeking to ban the companies from offering what they believe amounts to de facto sports betting.

“We view this as a legal matter and a consumer protection matter and there is also a fiscal interest for the state,” said Maryland Lottery and Gaming director John Martin in a press release. “Each of Maryland’s legal sports wagering operators completed a rigorous licensing process and is subject to extensive regulations that include responsible gaming requirements. Maryland lawmaker files bill to kill sports betting

The latest trend in sports betting legislation seems to be to try to shut down legal markets.

On 20 February a Maryland lawmaker filed a bill to shut down that state’s legal sports betting market. It is the second bill across the US this year calling for the end to an already legal market. Lawmakers in Vermont filed a similar bill there on 4 February.

In Maryland, Senator Joanne Benson filed SB 1033, which would shut down the legal online sports betting market on 1 January 2026. In the text of the bill, Benson suggests that some operators have application fees refunded in certain circumstances. It would not affect the status of Maryland’s brick-and-mortar sportsbooks.

Retail sports betting launched in December 2021 in Maryland. Digital platforms launched in November 2022. Through January 2025, bettors had wagered a combined $12.2 billion (£9.6 billion/€11.7 billion) across both verticals, and the state got $143.2 million in tax revenue. Betr awarded Maryland wagering licence

Microbetting wagering platform Betr was awarded its Maryland licence at a Sports Wagering Application Review Commission (SWARC) meeting on Wednesday (26 June) morning. However the company must still go through a controlled demonstration before launch.

Betr is live in two other states – Ohio and Virginia – after it exited Massachusetts earlier this year. Betr also has a temporary licence in Indiana but has not launched there yet.

Owned by YouTube star and boxer Jake Paul and Joey Levy, Betr is among a handful of smaller betting companies that have been able to find success in crowded markets.

Maryland’s lottery commission in May signed off on Betr’s Maryland wagering licence. But in Maryland, SWARC is the only group that has the authority to issue a licence.

Maryland: Betfred to exit, Bally’s and VSC to enter wagering market

Digital wagering operator Betfred Sportsbook revealed that it will be exiting the state of Maryland at Thursday's (20 June) Maryland State Lottery & Gaming Control Agency meeting.

Betfred’s US business, partnered with Long Shot’s (off track betting) OTB in Frederick, has struggled to gain traction and will shutter its retail and digital sportsbooks over the summer. Betfred will close its brick-and-mortar location on 30 June and take down its digital platform on July.

Maryland’s wagering law allows for more than 15 “Class B” licences, which are for OTBs, bingo halls and similar businesses. The idea was to spread the opportunity to participate in sports betting beyond the professional sports teams and casinos.

Long Shot’s was vocal during the legislative process, which also included using what lawmakers called a “lens of inclusion”. This was designed to help small businesses and women- and minority-owned businesses to enter the market.

Maryland sports handle jumps by 21.3% in March to $536.7m

Maryland celebrated one of its highest months on record, with a 21.3% increase in handle – taking the state to $4.07bn for the fiscal year to date

Maryland has reported a 21.3% increase in sports betting handle for March, reaching $536.7m (£427.7m/€499.6m) for the month.

Sports betting handle for Maryland in March was also up 39% year-on-year from the $386m in bets taken in the same month last year.

Sports betting: the numbers

Maryland handle for February was 18.8% behind January’s total of $545m despite the Super Bowl early in the month. However, that drop could also be attributed to the shorter month of February and the NBA All-Star break that ran between 16-21 February.

Mobile accounted for $522.1m in handle, 97.3% of the monthly total. Retail was responsible for $14.6m of the figure.

March’s handle total took Maryland to $4.07bn for the fiscal year to date. This was up 104.8% on the figure of $1.99bn from the same period of last year.
