Michigan igaming momentum continues in new year

Record monthly online gambling revenues lifted Michigan’s combined gross igaming and sports betting receipts to $331.2 million (£262.5m/€316.4m) in January.

The total figure, comprising igaming receipts of $248.2 million and sports betting revenue of $83 million, was up 25.4% over December’s total.

Online gambling growth

Last month, the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) reported that igaming revenue reached an all-time high of $2.9 billion in 2024.

The momentum appears to be continuing in the new year, with the market’s three biggest players increasing their monthly receipts.

BetMGM and MGM Grand Detroit, which generated market-leading igaming receipts of $640.1 million in 2024, remained at the top with $66.5 million in January. This figure was up from $65.1 million in Decemb..

Michigan lawmakers seeking online gambling hike of 1% or less

The measures seek the most modest of bumps to the tax rates, avoiding putting much pressure on operators.

Two Michigan state senators, Sam Singh and Jeremy Moss, have introduced two bills proposing modest tax increases on sports betting and igaming revenue. However, unlike other states that have attempted to introduce massive increases, these legislators are taking a more subtle approach.

Introduced 5 December, Senate Bill 1193 seeks to raise the tax rate on commercial sports betting operators’ adjusted gross receipts from 8.4% to 8.5%. It only applies to non-tribal betting; the state can’t adjust tribal betting rates.

The increase would give slightly more revenue to the city in which the sports betting operator’s land-based casino partner is located. That figure is now 30%, but the bill would increase it to 31%.

Proposed online casino tax hike is tiered

Concurrently, Senate Bill 1194 proposes a tiered increase in igaming tax rates, with adjustments depending on revenue brackets. ..

Michigan online gambling, sports betting AGR up YoY and month over month

Michigan's online gambling industry continues to grow, as July igaming and digital sports betting adjusted gross receipts (AGR) grew a combined 3.2% over June.
In addition, compared to July 2023, online gambling AGR was up 24.7% and sports betting was up 5.2%, according to the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB), which released results on Tuesday (20 August).

But the big news was wagering hold. Digital sports betting operators recorded an 11.3% win rate in July, the fourth consecutive month of double-digit hold, according to the Sports Handle revenue database. That’s the second-highest hold since digital operators went live in January 2021.

The operators’ most successful month for hold was September 2022 – the second football season during which digital betting was live. That month, operators kept 13.15% of handle.

Overall, Michigan online gambling commercial and tribal operators reported a combined $220.9m (£169.4m/€198.4m) in gross receipts. Michigan has three land-based ..

MGCB’s try at examining legal vs illegal activity causing consternation

A new six-page, six-question attestation form issued by the Michigan Gaming Control Board in late April has left some licensed igaming and sports betting suppliers in a corner, unsure how to respond to the open-ended inquiry that the board itself has revealed is more about “information gathering” at this point.

The “Illegal Gaming Attestation Internet Game Content Providers” form may be well-intentioned to stamp out support for illegal actors siphoning business and taxable revenue from Michigan’s legal market, but many stakeholders are concerned. Relationships and involvement in areas where the legal versus illegal activity of igaming is not cut and dried is common. Those operating globally are especially alarmed by some unclear questions and undefined terms. They believe unintended consequences may follow from the Michigan regulators’ methods.

“The form does not define every single relevant term, such as what constitutes ‘illegal gambling’,” said gaming lawyer Susan Hensel of Hense..
