Two college hoop teams investigated over gambling

Just over two weeks ahead of Selection Sunday, college basketball is getting more black eyes. Two universities have opened gambling investigations.

College basketball analyst Jeff Goodman tweeted on 26 February that the four University of New Orleans (UNO) players who have been benched since late January are now under investigation for gambling. In addition, on the West Coast, Fresno State sat out two players on 22 February in the midst of a gambling investigation.

The New Orleans men’s basketball team has held out four of its top five scorers since a Jan. 27 loss to UIW due to an investigation into sports gambling, sources told @TheFieldOf68.

Two Oklahoma betting bills get out of subcommittee

Two sports betting bills that would require four tribes to sign model legislation passed out of an Oklahoma subcommittee on Monday (10 February).

The bills unanimously passed out of the house subcommittee on appropriations and budget select agencies. They will now move to the full appropriations committee, although no hearing date has been set. Oklahoma’s legislature is set to adjourn on 30 May and there is no crossover deadline.

Representative Ken Luttrell, who has sponsored gambling legislation in the past, is carrying the bills. He is also the subcommittee chairman. On Monday, he explained that HB 1047 would bring sports betting to the state via the legislature. If the bill fails, HB 1101 would then be “triggered” and the decision would go to the voters via referendum.

Luttrell did not specify in either bill whether retail or digital betting – or both – would be legalised should either bill become law. He says that the “tribes can decide” and that “we’re not going to legislate..

ESPN Bet about to get closer to NY launch?
The New York State Gaming Commission Monday (23 September) will consider Penn Entertainment’s application to take over the WynnBet New York licence. The plan has been in the works since WynnBet exited the New York market earlier this year. Should Penn get approval, it will be able to launch its ESPN Bet platform in the biggest competitive market in the US. New York law caps the number of platforms at nine. Licences only come available if a company exits the state.

Penn executives on the company’s second-quarter earnings call pointed to a September launch, potentially by the start of football season. Should the regulator approve the licence transfer, Penn will still have a few steps to take before it could launch ESPN Bet.

Would a 1988 Congress have included digital betting in IGRA? Without a doubt.

Two weeks ago, the US Supreme Court decided to let be the status quo with regard to Florida sports betting. Since then, many in and around the online gambling world are pointing to a sea change and the expectation that tribes across the US will fast and furiously expand or change their offerings. But the view from inside Indian Country? Not so fast.

The US Supreme Court met on 13 June to decide whether to hear West Flagler Associates v. Haaland. The justices decided to pass, meaning a lower-court decision to allow the 2021 Florida-Seminole tribe compact will stand. That compact allows for what could be considered an expansion of the reach of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA).

It allows for bets to be considered placed where they are received. In simple terms, any bet placed in the state of Florida is considered to be a bet placed on tribal lands if the bet runs through a server on tribal lands.

IGRA changed life for many tribes

IGRA was passed in 1988 and, at its core, gav..
