Summer of sport fails to halt betting activity decline in Belgium

Fewer consumers in Belgium were active online and betting on this summer’s UEFA Euro 2024 national football team tournament than during the 2022 Fifa World Cup, according to new data from the country’s gambling regulator Kansspelcommissie.

Published this week, the ‘Summer of Sports 2024’ report details players’ betting activity throughout this summer. This period includes major events such as Euro 2024 and the Olympic Games in Paris, France.

Kansspelcommissie released figure for new players, with the average number of new online users during Euro 2024 at 1,031. This is lower than both the 2022 World Cup (1,487) and Euro 2020 (1,175). New online accounts fell from the 3,961 daily average at the 2022 World Cup to 3,298 this year. However, this did surpass the 3,022 daily average during Euro 2020.

Stand-out findings include a decline in the average number of online players active per day during Euro 2024. This stood at 196,95..

West Flagler stands down in Florida and announces partnership with Seminoles

After multiple years of legal challenges, Florida's Seminole tribe announced a new partnership with West Flagler and Associates on Monday (28 October) to promote jai alai on the tribe's Hard Rock Bet app.

The announcement came four months after the US Supreme Court declined to hear the West Flagler case against the US Department of Justice (DoJ). That decision allowed an appellate court decision to stand. At its heart, the ruling made it legal for the Seminoles to offer digital sports betting anywhere within Florida.

West Flagler and the Seminoles agreed to “refrain from engaging in any future litigation with respect to the Seminole tribe’s gaming operations”, according to a release. The announcement is a stunning reversal for the two sides. West Flagler, owners of two Florida pari-mutuels, spent three years and untold dollars in federal and state court battles in an attempt to declare the 2021 Seminole-Florida compact invalid.

“As I said when this litigation first star..

EasyJet founder launches EasyBet online betting brand

EasyGroup, the conglomerate that counts budget airline EasyJet among its businesses, has announced the launch of new online sports betting brand EasyBet.

Developed in partnership with betting exchange Matchbook, the EasyBet.net website is now live and taking bets on a range of sports. Customers have access to various markets and bet types across a betting exchange model.

EasyBet.net is accessible in the UK but it is not clear where exactly the brand will be active. It is licenced by both the Great Britain Gambling Commission and Alderney Gambling Control Commission.

The launch comes after EasyGroup historically pursued several brand infringement cases around the ‘Easy’ brand. This includes taking action over websites EasyBet.com and South Africa-facing EasyBet.co.za.

By launching its official brand, EasyGroup said this will assure customers it is a legitimate member of the ‘Easy’ family.

This venture marks the first time an ‘Easy’ brand has entered the sports betting industry. Ho..

VA Tech drops player over Temple betting probe

Temple transfer Hysier Miller has been dismissed from the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team amid a sports betting investigation of Temple, Sports Illustrated reported on 23 October. Last spring, Temple’s game against UAB was flagged for “suspicious activity” by US Integrity. The line for the game opened with UAB as a 1.5-point favourite, but moved to as high as eight. Miller scored eight points and committed three turnovers. His season average was 16 points per game.

That game was the second in which Temple did not cover a point spread – UAB won, 100-72. Despite having a losing regular season, Temple advanced to the ACC championship game and Miller averaged 27.8 points per game during the conference tournament. He announced he was entering the transfer portal ..

Sporttrade goes live in Virginia

Wagering platform Sporttrade, one of a handful of independently owned small digital sports betting sites, launched in its second state in two months on Thursday (24 October).

Sporttrade went live in Virginia this morning, marking the fifth state in which it is available. The platform launched in Arizona in September and is also live in Colorado, Iowa and New Jersey. Its first launch was in New Jersey in 2022.

The platform is the 16th available to bettors in Virginia where digital sports betting went live in January 2021.

Headquartered in Philadelphia, Sporttrade refers to itself as a “differentiated experience”. The platform offers traditional sports betting and, in some states, exchange wagering. Where that model is available, bettors can buy and sell bets throughout a game, as a trader would when buying and selling stocks.

Founder Alex Kane has shepherded his company through myriad changes since the first launch in New Jersey. He ultimately opted to offer a more traditional e..

Latest bill calls for online betting ban in Brazil

A bill to ban online sports betting in Brazil has been proposed by senator Sérgio Petecão on concerns that betting impacts mental health and drives financial debt.

Bill 4.031/2024 was put to the senate on 21 October. It is the latest in a series of initiatives by politicians to restrict online betting in Brazil, months before the licensed market is scheduled to open on 1 January 2025.

Preparations to award licences are in motion but various senators and public figures have expressed concern. Key issues are the impact that online betting can have on vulnerable groups including the elderly and those receiving social benefits.

Concern stems from a controversial study that claimed regular bettors have sacrificed money meant for food and medicine to wager. Despite its small sample size (1,337 consumers polled) and controversial findings, the study received significant media coverage.

Tribes, commercial operators aligned against sweepstakes

In a moment that seemed impossible in 2022, on Wednesday (23 October), Indian Country and the Sports Betting Alliance (SBA) in the US had a meaningful conversation about how to fight – together – against sweepstakes.

Victor Rocha invited lobbyist Jeremy Kudon, who represents the SBA (comprised of BetMGM, DraftKings, Fanatics and FanDuel) to share his thoughts on the rise of sweepstakes. That is the latest “unregulated, unlicensed and untaxed” gambling to emerge in the last year.

Sweepstakes offer gaming without initially using real money. In legal sports betting and igaming, consumers stake accounts with cash or cash equivalents. In sweepstakes, the games start off free to play, but then consumers can purchase “coins” or “virtual cash” with which to wager.

Recently, the legal industry has not only taken notice of the rise of sweepstakes, but is starting to educate itself on what they say is already a multi-billion-dollar industry. The goal is to stop it from continuing to prolifer..

BetMGM launches in Sweden as European expansion continues

LeoVegas has launched its BetMGM brand in Sweden, marking its third market launch outside North America.

BetMGM joins sister brands LeoVegas, GoGoCasino and the sports betting brand nya expekt in LeoVegas’ home market of Sweden.

The brand was initially developed for the US market via a joint venture between MGM Resorts and Entain. MGM snapped up LeoVegas in a $604 million deal in 2022 and subsequently bought Tipico’s US betting platform in June to support its entry into Brazil and bring LeoVegas’ sports betting tech in house.

LeoVegas CEO and founder Gustaf Hagman told iGB in September 2023 that MGM’s intention was to grow internationally in the digital space, with LeoVegas as the powerhouse.

Setting BetMGM live in the UK was its first point of call in September last year. This was followed by the Netherlands in April as the operator sought to replicate its initial success in the UK market elsewhere in Europe.

US fantasy operators sued in Massachusetts

A lawsuit filed in Massachusetts calls out fantasy sports operators and the blurred lines between sports betting and fantasy sports.

Joseph Curran of Gloucester, a suburb of Boston, is suing PrizePicks, Underdog Fantasy and Yahoo! Fantasy Sports. He claims that the companies “intentionally refrained from registering with Massachusetts” to offer the kinds of wagers he placed. Curran is asking that all his bets be refunded.

The lawsuit was filed on 17 October in Essex Superior Court.

Digital and retail sports betting are legal in Massachusetts after the state legislature approved it in August 2022. In-person sports betting went live in January 2023, and digital betting launched in March of that year. With sports betting, consumers can bet on game results or proposition bets. The operators are regulated and taxed by the state.

As sports teams, DraftKings and FanDuel up Missouri initiative game, Caesars goes to the people

Just as proponents of the Missouri legal sports betting initiative are beefing up television airtime, opponents are pulling back to focus on “grassroots” efforts and calling proponents' promise of $100m for education “dishonest”.

The initiative, Amendment 2, will go before the voters on the US presidential election ballot on 5 November. Proponents DraftKings and FanDuel have funded the richest campaign in Missouri history, according to the Missouri Independent. The two companies have funded ‘Winning for Missouri Education’ with more than $35m (£27m/€32.4m). DraftKings contributed another $4.6m on 17 October.

Caesars, the only operator to fund the opposition campaign ‘Missourians Against the Deceptive Online Gambling Amendment’, has contributed more than $14m. Combined, both sides have contributed a record sum of nearly $50m. And that’s for an initiative that is on the same ballot as an abortion initiative.

Brooke Foster, spokesperson for the opposition campaign, told ‘Politica..

How are personalisation and technology driving NBA in-play betting?

The NBA regular season tips off on Tuesday (22 October) with the reigning champion Boston Celtics hosting the New York Knicks. There’s sure to be fast-paced excitement on the court and operators will look to tap into that with their in-play offerings, which have surged in popularity of late.

In June the provider Simplebet, which specialises in micromarket pricing, revealed it had enjoyed a third straight NBA season of growth (up 75% year-on-year), with nearly 13 million in-play bets placed during the 2023-24 season.

Around $325m was wagered with operators using Simplebet’s microbetting products, with the company offering 86 unique in-play markets during the NBA post-season.

Following Simplebet’s third season of consecutive growth, DraftKings announced it had reached an agreement to acquire the microbetting specialist.
