Kalshi announces RG tools, IC360 partnership as roundtable approaches

Kalshi today (24 March) announced a new responsible gaming hub and a partnership with integrity monitor IC360 as it continues to toe the sports betting line.

In a post on X, Kalshi CEO Tarek Mansour said the platform is debuting a ‘Consumer Protection Hub’. This will include “features like deposit caps, trading breaks and voluntary opt-outs”. These features, Mansour said, work in tandem with Kalshi’s “market surveillance team” and regulatory systems.

The phrase “responsible gambling” (RG) is absent from the announcement. However, the features are essentially identical to those offered by regulated sportsbooks. All major operators currently offer deposit and time limits as well as self-exclusion tools.

Mansour also announced Monday that Kalshi is partnering with integrity monitor IC360 for its sports contracts. The CEO said IC360’s data will enhance Kalshi’s “ability to prevent bad actors” and report them to sports leagues and regulators.

SAFE Bet Act gets another day in the sun ahead of March Madness

A US congressman and senator are preparing to reintroduce the SAFE Bet Act, again saying they don't oppose digital gambling but want the federal government to make it safer.

On Tuesday (11 March), at a press conference on Capitol Hill, Representative Paul Tonko and Senator Richard Blumenthal gathered responsible and problem gambling advocates and an addiction survivor to talk about the Supporting Affordability & Fairness with Every Bet Act (SAFE Bet Act).

Tonko said there was a change to the original proposal, although the new bill has not yet been filed. In addition to previous requirements in the proposal, which saw no action in the prior congressional session, states would now be required to “work with the federal government to shut down the illegal market”.

This is an issue that states so far have taken the lead on. From Arizona to Michigan, regulators have sent cease-and-desist letters to offshore sportsbooks warning them to shutter. And state legislatures, including those..

Welcome to the Weekend Report, where iGB looks at the news that you may have missed across Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This week: Trump set to pardon Pete Rose, Genting Berhad names new CEO and controversial Pope betting markets.

Trump pledges to pardon Pete Rose

US president Donald Trump has said he will pardon baseball legend Pete Rose and hit out at the decision to exclude him from the sport’s Hall of Fame.

Rose was banned from baseball for life after admitting to betting on the sport back in 2004 but never bet against his own team. His bid for reinstatement was rejected in 2015.

Rose, who also served five months in prison after pleading guilty to tax evasion in 1990, died last year aged 83.

Writing on social media last week, Trump said he will pursue a “complete pardon” for Rose.

“He never betted against himself, or the other team. He had the most hits, by far, in baseball history and won more games than anyone in sports history,” Trump said, according to ESPN.

MA regulator to allow Super Bowl coin flip bets

A year after voting not to allow bets on the Super Bowl coin flip, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) reversed itself on Thursday (6 February). Operators in the state can now offer the bet ahead of Sunday’s Super Bowl between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles. Since last year, former MGC chair Cathy Judd-Stein retired and commissioner Paul Brodeur joined. Brodeur, who said “it’s not something that can be gamed, so I’m comfortable moving forward with this,” was the swing vote.

The commission also agreed to hold an adjudicatory hearing for Caesars Sportsbook. The company took bets on the total number of red cards during UEFA Euros 2024. MGC regulations prohibit bets on penalties, injuries and other things that could be manipulated. Caesars to..

Many UK players turn to gambling for escapism says Gambling Commission report

In a special report using data from the Gambling Survey for Great Britain, the UKGC has broken down the key motivators for UK gamblers, with escapism one of the driving factors.

On 30 January the UK Gambling Commission published an add-on piece of research to the Gambling Survey for Great Britain (GSGB) report released in July. The survey is the first comprehensive report looking at the behaviour of gamblers in Britain, including what the key motivators are for players across multiple verticals.

This latest report, which cites findings from the Reasons for Gambling Questionnaire (RGQ), considers the relationship between different gambling activities and the players’ reason for engaging in them.

The RGQ contained a series of 15 questions on the reasons GSGB participants gave for taking part in gambling. People who had gambled in the past 12 months were asked to state how often their main reason for gambling was indeed their key motivator across all activities they had listed. They..

Swedish report flags link between loot boxes and problem gambling

A report by Spelinspektionen has found a link between young adults that participated in gambling via video games while under age and risky gambling behaviours.

Published on 29 January, the study looks at the relationship between young people and gambling in Sweden. It focuses on individuals within the 18-24 age group and the results were presented to the government.

The results showed a link between those who started purchasing loot boxes as a minor and those who went on to show problematic gambling behaviours. Of those that purchased loot boxes before the age of 15, 87% displayed risky gambling behaviours as an adult.

Loot boxes and skin gambling on the rise

Among the stand-out findings was the increasing crossover between video games and online gambling. Loot boxes offer players the chance to purchase in-game items via a mystery box, while skin gambling using virtual goods, like player skins, to gamble.

Of all male young adults who took part in the survey, each had experienced ..

Industry calls lopsided Minnesota online sports betting hearing “a media stunt”

In Minnesota, a state that has considered legalising sports betting since the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) was overturned in 2018, Senator John Marty today (8 January) held a hearing on the issue. But he didn't invite industry reps.

The decision to keep the industry out of the hearing in front of the state senate finance committee was by design. In his comments before testimony began, Marty acknowledged that the state has been struggling with whether or not to legalise.

But he also said that no previous hearing had “focused on harm”. While “harm” may not have been a focus in previous hearings, problem and responsible gambling advocates testified many times.

Marty also suggested that sports betting “is currently legal in Minnesota”. He said betting with friends or strangers is legal. But “sports bookmaking where a corporate entity can come in and profit off of your betting” is not legal. He went on to qualify gambling addiction “as powerful as any op..

FanDuel rallies customers against proposed MI tax hike

FanDuel this week sent a letter to Michigan customers encouraging them to oppose two bills that would raise tax rates on digital sports betting and icasino, according to Casino Reports. One bill would increase the tax rate on digital wagering by 0.1%. Another would raise the rate on online casino by 1%. The idea is to generate more tax dollars for state and local governments.

FanDuel’s emails point customers to a form on the Sports Betting Alliance’s (SBA) website. The SBA also has tabs to click through to encourage consumers in Georgia and Texas to tell lawmakers they want legal digital gambling.

The SBA is a trade group comprised of BetMGM, DraftKings, Fanatics Sporstsbook and FanDuel.
