Pennsylvania gambling revenue up in January despite sports betting decline

Gambling revenue in Pennsylvania increased 10.9% year-on-year during January despite the state’s sports betting market reporting further declines.

Total market revenue in January amounted to $529.1 million (£417.8 million/€504.7 million). This, according to figures published yesterday (20 February) by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, surpasses $477.2 million in January 2024.

This total does, however, fall 0.8% short of the $533.1 million generated in December.

Online gambling the star of the show in Pennsylvania

Starting with online gambling, revenue here climbed 40.5% year-on-year to $210.2 million. This, however, falls short of the record $223.6 million reported in December last year.

Online slots drew the most revenue in this sector, with the $158.6 million being 44.2% ahead of last year. Internet table games revenue also climbed 32.7% to $48.9million, although online poker revenue dipped 2.3% to $2.6 million.

Sweden gambling revenue edges up to SEK27.85 billion in 2024

Gambling revenue in Sweden increased 2.65% year-on-year during 2024, driven by growth within the country’s commercial online gaming market.

Total gambling revenue in the 12 months to 31 December 2024 hit SEK27.85 billion (£2.07 billion/€2.49 billion/$2.62 billion). This surpasses the SEK27.13 billion reported in Sweden in the previous year.

Figures published by regulator Spelinspektionen yesterday (20 February) highlight igaming as the stand-out market in Sweden. During the 12-month period, online gambling generated SEK17.84 billion in total revenue, an increase of 5.0% from the 2023 total.

Annual revenue from state lottery and slots also increased 2.2% year-on-year to SEK5.72 billion. On top of this, non-profit games and national lotteries revenue climbed 2.6% to SEK3.70 billion.

Denmark gambling revenue rises to DKK7.27 billion in 2024

Gross gambling revenue in Denmark increased 6.9% year-on-year during 2024, mainly due to a double-digit rise within the country’s online casino market.

Revenue in Denmark hit DKK7.27 billion (£811.2 million/€974.1 million/$1.02 billion) in the 12 months to 31 December 2024. This surpasses the DKK6.80 billion posted in the previous year.

Data published yesterday (13 February) by regulator Spillemyndigheden shows online casino was the main source of revenue by some margin. In total, revenue from online casino in 2024 topped DKK3.53 billion, up 14.7% on 2023.

Slots accounted for 78.2% of all online casino revenue during the year. Blackjack drew 6.7% of revenue and roulette 6.4%. Remaining revenue was spread across poker, bingo and other games.

Great Britain online GGY up 21% in Q4 amid record customer activity

Online gross gambling yield (GGY) in Great Britain increased 21% year-on-year during the fourth quarter of 2024 to £1.54 billion (€1.85 billion/$1.92 billion) as the total number of bets and spins reached a record high.

Data published yesterday (6 February) by the Great Britain Gambling Commission covers the three months to 31 December 2024. It primarily covers online gambling but also references GGY and activity in the land-based betting sector.

Q3 online growth fails to offset continued land-based decline in Sweden

Gambling revenue in Sweden hit SEK6.66 billion (£477 million/€574 million/$605 million) in Q3, with growth in the igaming segment failing to offset declines in land-based.

Revenue was 1.3% behind the SEK6.74 billion recorded during Q3 of 2023, Sweden regulator Spelinspektionen reports.

The figure also falls 3.4% short of SEK6.89 billion in Q2 of this year. On top of this, Q3 revenue was the lowest quarterly total since SEK6.58 billion was reported in Sweden in Q1 2023.

Online growth fails to halt Denmark gambling revenue decline in September

Gambling revenue in Denmark fell 2.8% year-on-year in September as growth within the country’s online sector failed to offset declines elsewhere in the market.

Revenue for September was DKK533 million (£62 million/€74 million/$81 million), data from Denmark regulator Spillemyndigheden shows. This falls short of DKK569 million last year and is also 3.2% less than August’s total.

Online casino gaming remains the primary source of revenue in Denmark by some distance. For September, revenue topped DKK288 million, up 12.1% from the previous year but short of DKK299 million in August.

Some 77.1% of all online casino revenue came from slot machines. Blackjack and roulette each accounted for 6.7% of revenue in this sector, poker 3.6%, bingo 3.1% and other games 2.7%.

Online casino drives Denmark gambling revenue to DKK571m in August

Gross gaming revenue (GGR) in Denmark reached DKK571m (£64.2m/€76.6m/$84.1m) in August as online casino growth offset declines elsewhere in the market.
The August total was 4.3% ahead of last year, according to data from Denmark regulator Spillemyndigheden. It was also 3.1% more than DKK554m in July of this year.

Growth was driven by a 20.8% year-on-year increase in online casino revenue to DKK299m in August.

This was also ahead of July by 5.3% and not far off the all-time monthly revenue record for the vertical. Spillemyndigheden reported DKK309m in online casino GGR in March of this year.

Gambling revenue in Lithuania increased 12.6% year-on-year to €116.0m (£99.3m/$126.7m) in H1 with a strong online performance mitigating a decline in land-based revenue.

Detroit casino revenue down 8.8% year-on-year

Detroit, Michigan's three casinos recorded $94.4m (£75.2m/ €88.0m) in revenue for January.

This marked a dip of 8.8% from January 2023. In total, $93.9m came from table games and slots, while $500,221 was generated by retail sports betting.

The overall revenue also fell month-on-month, trickling down by 18.8% from Detroit’s December report.

In terms of market share, MGM held 48% in January. MotorCity held 30%, while Hollywood Casino at Greektown took up 22%.

Portugal sets €215.3m online gambling revenue record in Q3

Online gambling revenue in Portugal hit a new quarterly high of €215.3m (£185.6m/$235.4m) in Q3, helped by record figures from the igaming segment.

Total market revenue in the three months to 30 September 2023 surpassed the existing record of €122.0m, which was set in Q2, by 4.6%. The Q3 figure was also 36.1% higher than €158.2m in Portugal in the same period in 2022.

BetMGM and NHL announce multi-year extension to partnership

BetMGM will continue to be an official sports betting partner of the National Hockey League (NHL) after penning a multi-year extension.

Nevada gambling revenue exceeds $1.3bn in October

Gambling revenue in Nevada increased 3.1% year-on-year to $1.32bn (£1.04bn/€1.21bn) in October, helped by growth across multi-denomination slots, baccarat and sports pool betting.

Revenue was ahead of $1.28bn in October 2022 and also 3.9% more than $1.27bn in Nevada in September this year. It was also the best October revenue total in the history of the state’s market.
