New Zealand government proposes extending TAB NZ monopoly online

New Zealand government has introduced new legislation to extend the current monopoly TAB NZ holds for retail sports betting and horse racing wagering in the country to also cover the online market.

Filed by racing minister Winston Peters and announced over the weekend, the legislation would amend the Racing Industry Act 2020. This would effectively grant a TAB NZ monopoly across the entire sports and horse racing betting market in New Zealand.

TAB NZ was established under the Racing Industry Act. It replaced the Racing Industry Transition Agency (RITA), which previously oversaw the country’s betting activity. According to the government, TAB NZ already accounts for 90% of revenue within the New Zealand racing industry.

Minister Peters said that extending the current monopoly model to online operations would increase revenue and support the wider industry. He added that establishing TAB NZ as the sole online operator would help protect consumers from illegal offshore sites.

Tab NZ pens long-term strategic partnering with Entain

Tab NZ, the sole holder of a betting licence in New Zealand, has entered into a long-term strategic partnership with Entain.

Under the arrangement, which remains subject to ministerial approval, Entain will support Tab NZ with delivering wagering and broadcast functions in the country for a period of 25 years.

Tab NZ said it took the decision to enter such a partnership due to increasing competition, rising costs, capital constraints and other challenges that have impacted its ability to deliver adequate funding to racing and sports.

With these challenges expected to increase, Tab NZ said it had spent the last six months engaging with a range of operators in relation to a strategic partnering arrangement and received a number of proposals, including the successful pitch from Entain.

TAB NZ hits profit target for the first time in FY22/23

TAB NZ recorded above budget profits for the first time in months thanks to strong returns from sports betting and domestic racing.

For the month to 31 January 2023, the gaming operator reported a profit of NZ$14.6m (US$9.1m/€8.6m/£7.6m), which was $0.3m above budget. In the sixth monthly trading update for the 2022-23 financial year, this was the first time the operator has posted a profit above budget.

Turnover of $230.1m was 0.9% above budget, in part thanks to a strong racing and sports calendar.

Following on from December, overall field sizes across all three racing codes in January were again either up on, or on par with, the year-to-date average. The peak meeting turnover of $6.6m was on 21 January for the Karaka Million at Pukekohe.

Tab NZ misses profit budget again in November

Tab NZ again fell short of its monthly profit budget in November despite surpassing its gross betting revenue (GBR) target for the month.

Tab NZ, New Zealand’s sports betting monopoly, said while major events such as football’s 2022 Fifa World Cup, horse racing’s Melbourne Cup and the NZ Trotting Cup helped it to surpass turnover and GBR levels, gross betting margin and profit missed budget.

Retail traffic continued to hold strong following the easing of Covid-19 restrictions and the overall field size across all three codes was up on the year-to-date average. Other factors such as continued competitive pressure from unregulated offshore operators, reduced betting margin and lower average bet size in key customer segments impacted the figures.

Tab NZ had already warned in early December that due to it missing budgets a number of times in recent months, it would have to reduce distributions to racing codes across New Zealand by 9% for the 2022-23 financial year ending 31 July 2023.

Tab NZ misses June revenue and turnover budgets

New Zealand’s Tab NZ fell short of both revenue and turnover budgets in June as a result of ongoing “softening economic conditions” in the country as consumers continued to adjust to the rising cost of living.

Wagering turnover for the month reached NZ$197.3m (£102.0m/€121.5m/US$124.2m), which was 3.9% or $8.1m below budget.

Net profit amounted to $11.0m, some $1.7m below a budget of $12.7m, with betting profit $1.5m under budget at $9.3m and gaming profit also $200,000 off budget at $1.7m.

However, Tab NZ did note that operating expenses for the month were $200,000 below an initial budget of $10.0m, amounting to $9.6m, while code distributions and other payments were $100,000 above budget at $13.2m.

Analysing its monthly performance, Tab NZ said the primary reason for it missing budgets was due to consumers not spending as much as initially anticipated amid the rising cost of living in New Zealand.

Tab NZ misses budget targets amid cost of living pinch

TAB New Zealand missed budget in terms of turnover and revenue in May as softening economic conditions outpaced the easing of lockdown measures.

In its monthly trading update, the betting business said turnover of NZ$202.7m (USD$124.3m/€119.4m/£103.5m) was 3.6% below budget and gross betting revenue (GBR) of $32.0m was down on budget by 4.4%. The gross betting margin (GBM) of 15.8% was 0.1% below budget.

Reported profit for the month was $10.8m, which was $2.4m below budget. Operating expenses were $10.6m for the month, which was $0.4 above budget.

Tab NZ said the key performance results for May were in line with the overall positive trends of the 2021/22 financial year.

Average NZ thoroughbred starters per race was 10.7, slightly above the year-to-date average of 10.6, while the peak turnover for a domestic meeting was $1.9m on 14 May for the Campbell’s Infrastructure Cup Day at Arawa Park.
