Tennessee sports betting spend falls again in February

Consumer spending on sports betting in Tennessee fell for the third consecutive month in February, although the amount wagered was higher than the previous year.

Gross wagers in Tennessee during February hit $417.4 million (£322.8 million/€384.7 million). This fell 24% short of January’s total but beat the $380.4 million spent on sports betting last year by 8.7%.

Tennessee has now seen gross wagers fall each month, according to the Tennessee Sports Wagering Council, since the $598.6 million bet in November 2024 set a new state record.

After $3.9 million in undisclosed “adjustments”, gross handle for the month stood at $413.5 million. This was 23.9% less than January but 9.3% ahead of February last year.

As for government revenue, overall privilege tax from sports betting amounted to $7.6 million.

The council does not publish figures for revenue, nor does it offer a breakdown of activity by operator or sport.

Tennessee sports betting handle dips month-on-month in January

Player spending on sports betting in Tennessee declined month-on-month in January, although the amount wagered is the fourth highest since the state launched its legal market in November 2020.

Gross wagers in Tennessee in January hit $549.0 million (£442.7 million/€530.4 million). This is 17.4% above last year but 4.1% behind the $572.7 million wagered in December.

The monthly record for gross sports wagers in Tennessee stands at $598.6 million, which was set in November 2024. January’s total is 8.3% shy of this figure.

Data from the Tennessee Sports Wagering Council shows after adjustments of $5.3 million, gross handle for the month was $543.6 million. This beats the previous year by 16.7% but falls 4.6% short of December.

In terms of tax, privilege tax for the opening month of the year topped $10.0 million.

Tennessee sports betting handle tops $572.7 million in December

Gross wagers on sports in Tennessee reached $572.7 million (£470.5 million/€558.9 million) during December, the second-highest monthly amount on record for the Volunteer State.

December gross wagers beat the $495.1 million spent in the same month in 2023 by 15.8%. However, the total fell 4.3% short of the Tennessee record of $598.6 million set in November 2024.

The Tennessee Sports Wagering Council (SWC) also said after $2.9 million worth of adjustments, gross sports betting handle was $569.8 million. This beats December 2023 by 16.1% but is 4.1% behind November last year. Detail of these adjustments were not disclosed.

In terms of tax, the state generated $10.5 million from sports betting during December. The SWC does not indicate on the report what the adjustments are for, nor does it break down bets by operator or sport. The SWC also does not report operator revenue.
