Bill to ban college prop bets introduced in Congress

While the reintroduction of the proposed SAFE Bet Act has taken up most of the oxygen when it comes to federal bills seeking to limit sports betting, another bill has entered the chat that seeks to ban prop bets on college athletes.

Introduced on 25 February, the bill – ‘‘Providing Responsible Oversight and Transparency and Ensuring Collegiate Trust for Student Athletes Act,” or the PROTECT Act – is sponsored by first-term congressman Michael Baumgartner of Washington. He doubles as the chair of the college sports caucus.

“Sports gambling on college campuses has surged in recent years,” Baumgartner said in a press release. “Student athletes dedicate themselves to their sport and education and it’s essential that we protect their integrity both on and off the field.

“This bill doesn’t ban betting on college sports games, but it targets wagers on student athletes’ individual performances. We are witnessing a troubling rise in harassment of college athletes on campuses, as well as an a..

Bill to ban election betting filed in US congress

The legislative initiative responds to concerns that election betting could lead to the manipulation of results.

Representatives Jamie Raskin and Andrea Salinas today (19 December) introduced the Ban Gambling on Elections Act, a legislative effort to prohibit wagering on US elections. The move addresses growing concerns over the impact of political betting on election integrity and public trust in the democratic process.

This bill, a house counterpart to Senator Jeff Merkley’s legislation, aims to amend the Commodity Exchange Act to explicitly ban election betting.

Raskin emphasised the importance of maintaining public confidence in the electoral system. He described election betting as a practice that reduces democratic participation to a profit-driven gamble. Raskin said democracy requires transparent and trustworthy voting processes. He suggested that election betting creates a system clouded by betting odds and the influence of wagers.

This kind of betting “undermines” democrac..

US senate gambling hearing derailed by Kennedy’s and Hawley’s transgender fetish

Two US senators used a hearing on legal sports betting to push forward their own agendas on whether or not “biological males” should be allowed to play in women's college sports events.

Senators John Kennedy and Josh Hawley hijacked today’s (17 December) US congressional hearing about the Supporting Affordability and Fairness with Every Bet Act (SAFE Bet Act) to push forward a different agenda.

It was an ironic situation – as senators and witnesses were discussing how to protect student-athletes from harassment from bettors, Kennedy and Hawley harassed NCAA chief Charlie Baker in the most public of forums.

During a question-and-answer period, Louisiana Republican Kennedy veered off track with questions around why the NCAA “allows biological males” to play in games with “biological females”. The issue has been in the news after multiple women’s volleyball teams forfeited games against San Jose State after it was revealed that there was a transgender player on the team. Boise ..

US senators want FTC to investigate DraftKings, FanDuel

Senators Mike Lee and Peter Welch accuse the two operators of conspiring to control the US sports betting market.

Two US senators have formally requested that the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) investigate online sports betting platforms DraftKings and FanDuel.

In a letter dated 5 December, Republican senator Mike Lee and Democratic senator Peter Welch raised concerns about the companies allegedly coordinating efforts to suppress competition in the industry.

The senators cite public reports. These suggest DraftKings and FanDuel may have joined together to pressure other businesses not to work with rival betting platforms. Both companies are members of the Sports Betting Alliance (SBA). The senators claim the SBA has been used as a vehicle for these actions.

“After their merger to monopoly was blocked, it seems that FanDuel and DraftKings have arguably acted as one company, violating our antitrust laws,” wrote the senators.

We can’t allow online..
