Sources allege Fresno State basketball betting inquiry

The basketball programme at California State University, Fresno has reportedly found itself at the centre of a betting enquiry.

Sources close to the matter told ESPN on 22 February the case involves several of the Fresno State team’s players. So far, one player has been removed from the team, while two others have been suspended.

Mykell Robinson has not played for Fresno State since January and is no longer on the team. Fresno State also said in a statement that guards Jalen Weaver and Zaon Collins were being withheld from competition while the university reviews an “eligibility matter”.

Australian players launch class-action against Sportsbet

Up first, a group of Sportsbet customers in Australia have launched a class-action lawsuit against the operator, seeking to recover millions of dollars in losses.

Players are demanding Sportsbet repay the money they say was lost through “illegal” live betting, the Australian Associated Press reports. Digital in-play betting on sports is prohibited in Australia.

The suit said Sportsbet should refund gamblers who have lost money using Sportsbet’s ‘Fast Code’ service in the past six years. Fast Code allows players to bet on live sports by making a selection online and calling Sportsbet to place the wager.

SL Green CEO set for £10 million Times Square casino bonus

Up first, Marc Holliday, the CEO of the real estate investment trust, will receive a $10 million (£8 million/€9.7 million) bonus if he can secure a land-based casino at New York’s iconic Times Square.

According to Crain’s New York Business, SL Green confirmed the bonus last week. The trust is hoping to gain permission from the state to convert a 54-storey tower into a casino and hotel.

SL Green is working in partnership with Caesars Entertainment and Roc Nation on the bid for a New York casino. However, the project faces competition from a host of other interested parties.

Australia government mulls changes to research tax credits in gambling industry

Firstly this week, the Australian government could change the rules for gambling and betting operators that want to receive government research tax concessions. This comes after it emerged they claimed almost AU$90 million (£45.8 million/€54.9 million/US$59.5 million) in one year.

According to the Guardian, figures from the Australian tax office show four major gambling companies claimed $86.5 million in credits between them in 2021-22. These include Tabcorp, which received $39.5 million, Aristocrat with $22.2 million, Ainsworth Game Technology at $15 million and PointsBet $10 million.

Betfred stepping back from sports betting in several states
First, Betfred has confirmed it is exiting two more US states by announcing closure dates for its sports betting services in both Arizona and Virginia.

Betfred will cease online operations in Virginia first, with a date of 21 October confirmed by the bookmaker. This will be followed by a shutdown in Arizona a couple of weeks later on 4 November. Customers in both states will have until 10pm local time in each state to access their account and make withdrawal requests.

First this week, DraftKings has agreed to pay a $200,000 (£149,251/€178,756) penalty for selectively disclosing certain material non-public information on social media accounts, instead of all investors.

In July last year, DraftKings’ public relations company published posts on LinkedIn and X, formerly Twitter, about “strong growth”. This was despite DraftKings having not released its Q2 2023 financial results. DraftKings asked for the posts to be removed but did not distribute information to investors for another week.

French regulator l’Autorité Nationale des Jeux (ANJ) has estimated that players in the country will have bet approximately €360m (£308m/$393m) by the end of this summer’s Olympics in Paris.
